Gangnam Breast Augmentation | Is Breast Surgery Different for Foreigners and Koreans?
Explains how breast augmentation differs for foreigners and Koreans, covering rib cage and skin differences, implant selection, costs, scarring, and capsular contracture.

Hello, I am Dr. Kim Ju-won, Director of Melon Plastic Surgery Clinic, your breast physician with a solution.
Some people come in with photos of foreign women and ask us to make them look exactly the same.
Is that possible? Is breast augmentation different for foreigners and Koreans?
Today, we will look at whether breast surgery differs between foreigners and Koreans, and if so, what differs and how,
from body type to implant selection and recovery.
Breast Augmentation | Foreigners vs. Koreans: Differences in Rib Cage and Skin

Foreigners and Koreans generally differ in physical build. Korean body types tend to have a narrower rib cage and thinner skin, whereas more foreigners have a wider rib cage and thicker skin. That is why we examine skin tissue closely when planning surgery for Korean patients. Thin skin can make implant wrinkles visible through the skin or allow the implant edges to show slightly.
Foreigners generally have a wider rib cage. However, that does not mean every foreign patient can receive a large implant. Their skin may be thin, and their rib cage shape may not suit a large implant.
Although these differences exist, we do not change the breast augmentation consultation or apply a different surgical method. Consultation and surgery are the same for foreign and Korean patients. We assess breast structure, skin, and body type, then discuss the breast you want.
The same applies when a foreign and a Korean patient have the same height and weight. Height and weight are only one part of body type and are not the main criteria for breast augmentation. Some conditions may match, while others may differ.
Implant Selection | Implants are chosen regardless of nationality

Preferences for breast shape vary from person to person, and cultural differences can also play a role. The surgical method is the same, but the look and trends people prefer differ from country to country. For example, many patients in English-speaking countries want a clearly full, voluptuous size, while in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, there is a strong preference for a soft, rounded, natural-looking line.
Volume matters in breast surgery, but so does the overall feel. That is why, when discussing implants, it is worth talking about not only size but also projection, shape, gel fill ratio inside the implant, width, and more. Once you understand which implant shape suits your body and why it is the right choice, your ideas about size also become clearer, and a clear picture of which implant would suit you comes into focus.
Choosing an implant wider than the rib cage can result in the implant edges showing through the skin. Conversely, an implant that is too narrow can create a line that is out of balance with the rib cage. If your skin is relatively thin and surgery is done with an excessive size, the risk of rippling may increase.
Breast Surgery Cost | Depends on the Procedure Needed

Breast surgery costs vary depending on the implant used, the surgical method, and the scope of anesthesia and aftercare. First, we need to confirm whether it is a simple augmentation, whether additional corrective surgery is needed for sagging or complications, or whether it is a revision or even a third surgery.
Surgery costs also vary depending on how much involvement there is from a board-certified anesthesiologist.
* Breast surgery is a fairly major cosmetic procedure that requires general anesthesia. Always confirm that the hospital has a board-certified anesthesiologist on staff.
Therefore, an accurate price can only be determined after discussing your current breast condition and desired outcome and considering the scope of surgery required.
Breast Augmentation | Scarring and Swelling Vary from Person to Person

Scar recovery after breast augmentation depends mainly on your inherent skin type and how you care for it. Even with incisions of the same length, some people end up with scars that are barely visible, while others are left with more noticeable scarring.
For keloid-prone skin, some degree of scarring is unavoidable, but it can be improved with proper care. Scars are an area where results vary greatly depending on how they are managed. Following the clinic's guidelines, such as applying scar cream, keeping your daily environment clean and comfortable, and protecting the incision from friction, makes a clear difference in how the scar heals.
Swelling also varies widely between individuals. In the early stages after surgery, the swelling can feel firm and extend up to the upper chest, but it gradually subsides as the breasts begin to settle over time. It is also helpful to know that swelling on each side may go down at different times.
If you live overseas and are having surgery in Korea, plan your return flight around your surgery and recovery schedule. Rather than traveling or getting active before the breasts have settled, it is better to have some follow-up checks after surgery and discuss a personalized aftercare plan with your doctor before flying home.
Breast Augmentation Capsular Contracture | Are Complications Different for Foreigners and Koreans?
Capsular contracture after breast augmentation refers to a condition in which the scar capsule that forms around the implant becomes abnormally thick and hard. When capsular contracture occurs, the shape and feel of the breast change. It is not a complication limited to any particular nationality; it is a possibility that must be considered in every surgery involving implants.
To reduce the risk of capsular contracture, it is important to choose an implant that suits your body type during consultation and to take care during surgery to minimize bleeding and tissue damage. After surgery, it is also essential to monitor for sudden hardness, pain, or changes in implant position.
Abnormal symptoms, including capsular contracture, can sometimes be hard to judge from photos alone. If only one breast suddenly swells, you develop a fever, or you feel unusual pain, please inform your medical team immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the consultation and surgical methods for breast augmentation different for foreigners and Koreans?
No, the consultation and surgical method are the same for foreigners and Koreans. Since there are differences in physical build, we examine breast structure, skin, and body type before discussing the breast you want.
Does implant selection depend on nationality?
No, implant selection is not based on nationality. An implant wider than the rib cage may show its edges through the skin, and one that is too narrow may not balance with the rib cage, so implants are chosen to suit your body type. It is recommended to discuss projection, shape, gel fill ratio, width, and other factors together.
How is the cost of breast augmentation determined?
Breast surgery costs depend on the implant used, the surgical method, and the scope of anesthesia and aftercare. We first need to determine whether it is a simple augmentation, whether correction of sagging or complications is needed, or whether it is a revision. An accurate price can only be given after discussing your current breast condition and desired outcome and considering the surgical scope required.
What should I check regarding anesthesia for breast surgery?
Always confirm that the hospital has a board-certified anesthesiologist. Breast surgery is a fairly major cosmetic procedure that requires general anesthesia, and the cost can also vary depending on how much involvement a board-certified anesthesiologist has.
Are scarring and swelling after breast augmentation the same for everyone?
No, scarring and swelling vary greatly from person to person. Scar results depend on your inherent skin type and how you care for it, while swelling is initially firm after surgery and gradually subsides over time. Swelling on each side may go down at different times.
Is capsular contracture a complication that only occurs in foreigners?
No, capsular contracture is not a complication limited to any particular nationality. It is a possibility that must be considered in every surgery involving implants. When the capsule becomes abnormally thick and hard, the shape and feel of the breast can change. If you experience sudden hardness, pain, or a change in position after surgery, or if only one breast suddenly swells and you develop a fever, notify your medical team immediately.
